Projects 2014 > Trove > Journal
The inital brief for our product is that is has to be:
- Portable - For quick exits with the childs most precious memories in
- Customisable/Adaptable - To create a personalised kit
- Control given to child - unlike life story books, we want the complete control given to the child about what objects and stories are recorded
- Size Constraints - children in care might be sharing rooms with other children and may have limited space.
- Suitable for boys and girls
- Function to directly record audio using RFID
- Could be private or shared experience
- Enabling multiple narratives to coexist
And the main one:
Provide security in a child's biography/identity to enable playfulness.
Here are some initial ideas I had about what the kit could look like, and feedback from the young coaches underneath.
1) Treasure Chest: The treasure chest has customisable panel stickers to increase longevity and keep the box engaging throughout teen years.

"marvelous" "jewellery box"
2) Satchel: When getting the objects out, it is a random choice. This idea was to highlight life’s random nature, and less based on linear chronological events and objects. This idea was inspired by getting children to think about life less as a linear timeline.

"dunno" "ok"
3) Rucksack:
Enables mini exhibition of objects for sharing to the world and other parts of the rucksack have hidden compartments
Toolbelt: Allows story tagging to objects on the go or larger objects.

"Awesome" "Brilliant"
What we can deduce from this is to ask better questions next time to get better more detailed answers. And also the satchel is a no-go idea!
Questions:
Will the young coaches have different needs in the product from children in care or children who have been adopted?
Can we please the young coaches, and the other childrens groups with one design?
